… Fireworks & Freedom … Community to celebrate Independence Day with big event this Saturday at REC

From Staff Reports

This year’s Fireworks and Freedom Celebration has been moved from Main Street in Leakesville to the Greene County Rural Events Center on High School Road due to ongoing renovations at Green Park. While the location has changed, organizers are promising another day of fun, food, fellowship and entertainment at Greene County’s annual patriotic celebration.
“Due to renovations to Green Park getting underway recently, the decision was made to move the event to the Rural Events Center across from the high school for this year,” said Arrixie Garretson, a volunteer with the Main Street Leakesville Organization (MSLO), which sponsors the event annually. “We are excited about the event, despite the change in venue, and are looking forward to a day of family-friendly fun.”
“We have a lot of vendors lined up and plenty of entertainment for everyone to enjoy.”
The Fireworks and Freedom Celebration is set to get underway this Saturday, June 28 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Rural Events Center. There is a full slate of activities planned, and a nice list of specialty craft and food vendors, as well as at least eight stand-alone food trucks. There will be live entertainment on-stage throughout the day, as well as the annual Fireworks & Freedom Pageant, a car show, a scavenger hunt, organized kids games such as sack races, 3-legged races and a watermelon eating contests.
“We have a lot of great activities planned and the vast majority of it is absolutely free,” said MSLO volunteer Tammie Clark. “We will have several bounce houses and slides for the youngsters and a full-day pass will be just $5.”
“We really feel like there is something for everyone on the program.”
The schedule of events can be found on page 8 of this edition of the newspaper and information is also available on the MSLO Facebook page.
There is not a parade planned for this year’s event, but Garretson and Clark said there will be a great concert to entertain everyone until the start of the fireworks show, which will also be at the Rural Events Center and promises to be bigger and better than ever.
“We will have Dayton Turner live in concert from 6 p.m. until the fireworks show, which is set to begin around 9 p.m.” Clark added. “We are expecting a good crowd for that and hope that our music lovers will show up early for the concert as we will have line dancing with a live DJ from 5 p.m. until the concert gets underway.”
“Bring your lawn chair, come out, and enjoy all the fun things planned as well as the time of fellowship with friends and neighbors,” Clark added.
