A Leakesville man is behind bars in Lucedale in connection to a shooting incident in the George County community of Central last Tuesday.
Billy Joe Stewart, 32, of Papa Road, is in the George-Greene Regional Correctional Facility under a $10,000 commercial bond. He was arrested Thursday, Jan. 17, two days after he reportedly fled the scene of an altercation in the 100 block of Richard Reeves Road that ended in one person being shot and a second with other injuries. Both were treated and released from George Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Stewart avoided police for two days as authorities placed alerts around the state and region. He was reportedly taken into custody after being found hiding out at a residence in rural George County. The George County Sheriff’s Office did not provide details when asked about his capture. However, in an email Sheriff Keith Havard said he wished to thank the public for helping in Stewart’s apprehension.
Stewart is facing a charge of aggravated assault in the shooting, which remains under investigation.
Stewart has a long history of trouble with the law including an arrest in Greene County last April when police found an active meth lab in the back of a truck he was driving. He was most recently in the Greene County Jail in December after being booked on a charge of resisting arrest.
