Incumbents sweep McLain vote. Sims and J.T. Young sin seats on State Line board

From Staff Reports

The good night for incumbents continued Tuesday as results from municipal elections in McLain and State Line were reported.

In McLain, voters unanimously chose to give incumbent mayor Steve McCluskey another term. According to unofficial results, McCluskey defeated former mayor Clyde Sylvester by a 53-21 margin on Tuesday.

Incumbent aldermen Len Moody, David Hartfield, Francis Byrd, Janice Guest and Kenneth Cumbie were also all re-elected. Hartfield and Cumbie led the ticket with 64 and 63 votes, respectively. Guest finished with 55, while Moody (53) and Byrd (49) outlasted challengers Christopher Sylvester (32 votes) and Cameron Duke (26).

In State Line, incumbent Willie L. Miller easily won re-election, but two challengers were able to displace incumbents at the Board of Aldermen’s table.

Miller outpaced challenger April Taylor by a 113-to-37 margin, according to unofficial results. Challengers Eris Sims and John Terry Young rose out of a crowded 12-candidate field to claim two of State Line’s five alderman positions. Sims earned 71 votes on Tuesday, while John Terry Young claimed 67. Current aldermen Don R. Hinton and Michial West led the ticket with 94 and 87 votes, respectively. Incumbent Michael Coaker appears to have earned re-election as he received 66 votes on Tuesday. Incumbent Perry Young was the first candidate left out as he finished behind Coaker with 58 votes. Dana Turner finished with 56, followed by incumbent James B. Waller (44), Dorothy Simpson (43), Brenda Hill (32), Pamela Causey (31) and Brenda Mosley (16).
