Charges against Johnson upgraded to capital murder in connection to New Year’s Day triple homicide

Charges against Drexler Dwight Johnson have been upgraded to capital murder in connection to the triple homicide that sent shockwaves through the State Line Community on New Year’s Day.

According to a press release issued by District Attorney Angel Myers McIlwrath Friday afternoon, Johnson now faces three counts of Capital Murder for the killings of Lester Campbell, Rhonda Denson and Dirk Jason Thornton at a convenience store in State Line early on Jan. 1, 2025. Johnson, who was originally charged with Accessory After the Fact to Capital Murder, also faces one count of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

The press release from the DA’s office noted that a preliminary hearing for Johnson on the new charges will be held at a later date. Myers McIlwratch said no further comments will be made at this time as the case proceeds through the judicial process.
