The Greene County High School basketball teams rolled into the Thanksgiving break on back-to-back wins after sweeping Perry Central and Lamar Christian School last Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Cats improved to 7-0 on the season after defeating Perry Central by 50 points on Friday and holding on to edge Lamar Christian 58-56 on Saturday. The GCHS men’s team improved to 3-2 on the year after defeating the Bulldogs by a 59-55 margin on Friday and claiming a 6-point win over Lamar Christian on Saturday.
Senior Bre Brown led the Lady Wildcats on Friday with 14 points and seven rebounds in the 70-50 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Freshman Reanna Moody had 11 points and two rebounds, while Senior Destiny Eubanks, junior Kat Garrett and sophomore Charlee Meadows each added seven points in the win. Eubanks also had seven rebounds and she and Garrett added four assists apiece.
On Saturday, GCHS held an 11-point lead at the half, but had to battle to hold on for a 2-point victory.
“We had a good lead, but their number 11 hit some big time 3-pointers, and that coupled with a few unforced errors allowed them back in the game,” GCHS women’s coach Dale Kimble said. “Destiny, Kat and Lisa (Johnson) did a great job guarding their 6-foot post player and Kelsie (Mitchell), Charlee and Reanna did a good job on number 11, but she hit the 3-pointers with people in her face.”
“Overall, I am proud of the girls for maintaining their composure down the stretch.”
Garrett led the way for GCHS with 21 points. She hit 5-of-10 3-pointers for her best outing of the year from behind the arc. She also had five rebounds in the win.
Brown recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and junior Gen Walley added eight points and six rebounds. Eubanks tallied seven points, four rebounds and three assists. Kelsie Mitchell led the team with four assists.
In boys’ action, GCHS had three players with double-figure scoring as the Cats defeated Perry Central by four points on Friday. Junior Brock Green posted a double-double in the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Chris Gray had a big game as well with 13 points and nine rebounds, while senior Anthony Calhoun posted 12 points, four rebounds and a team-high seven assists. Gray and Green had four assists each.
On Saturday, Calhoun had 14 points to lead GCHS to a 52-46 win over Lamar Christian. Gray had 10 points and five rebounds, while Green had seven points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Conner West had a big night with 17 rebounds, four points, three steals and a team-high five assists.
Sophomore Ashton Peters averaged a solid eight points per game in the two wins to help round out the effort by the Wildcats.
Both teams will be back in action next week with a trip to North Pike on the schedule on Tuesday and the Richton Rotary Tournament on tap beginning Thursday.
