Residents struggle to come to terms with loss of four teenagers in auto accident
By DAVID?BRELAND
Herald Staff
A tragic accident that claimed the lives of four county teens last Wednesday has held a grip on the hearts and minds of Greene County.
What began as five friends getting in the last day of dog hunting season on a clear, cool January morning, abruptly turned tragic. The pickup the group was riding in left the road, striking an embankment and violently flipping before coming to rest on the road way. When the fierce crash ended, three teens and GCHS students lay dead, with two more seriously injured.
Lost in the crash were Kodi Everette Henderson, 15, Dillon Kraig Reid, 16, and Steven Bret Nicholson, 15. The driver, Russell “R.T.” Green, 17, and Joseph Leland “Jojo” Lister, 17, were seriously injured in the accident and flown to USA Medical Center in Mobile for treatment. Due to extensive injuries, Lister died Thursday afternoon at USA Medical Center. Green has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Judge tosses Crocker election suit

Barrow retains office without new election
By RUSSELL TURNER
Herald Staff
The saga surrounding the recent election of John Wayne Barrow, Sr., to the Greene County Board of Supervisors came to an end this week when a special appointed judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by former Supervisor J.M. ‘Buddy’ Crocker asking for election results to be overturned.
Barrow, a Republican, defeated then-incumbent Crocker by a 43-vote margin during the Nov. General Election. Crocker filed a civil suit against Barrow in November citing a number of criticisms he had with the election process and asking the court to throw out the results of the election and order a new one, under the supervision of new election managers. After hearing arguments from attorneys on both sides on Tuesday, Judge L. Breland Hilburn, of Hinds County, dismissed the suit and effectively, once and for all, confirmed Barrow as the winner.
Barrow, who assumed office in January and was promptly elected by fellow board members to serve as the body’s president, said after Tuesday’s hearing he was glad to be able to put the distraction behind him.
“I am extremely glad it’s over,” Barrow told the Herald before leaving the courtroom. “I am looking forward to putting my full focus on the county’s business.”

Freshman Rep. Dennis DeBar excited about opportunities as legislative term gets into full swing

Last week, the Mississippi House of Representatives speaker Philip Gunn named the chairmen and appointees to house committees.
Gunn, the first Republican speaker of the House since Reconstruction, used the new Republican majority to appoint many of his fellow party members to powerful and monied legislative committees, not an uncommon move by the majority party. Gunn’s appointments were lauded by Republican pundits across the state as a fair distribution of committee chairs to both Democrats and Republicans. Democrats did receive chairs of some larger, well-known committees, however, Gunn maintained Republican control of powerful committees such as gaming, banking and financial services, appropriations, apportionment and elections, legislative budget, public health, public utilities, insurance and military affairs — committees with a lot of influence and control of purse strings.

Thieves target local businesses for heists
By DAVID?BRELAND
Herald Staff
Two Leakesville businesses have been burglarized in the past month.
Last Thursday, employees at Ward’s found the store’s safe missing when opening the for business that morning. According to Leakesville police chief Robert O. “Bobby” Fick, the burglars broke the glass of the drive-thru window to gain entry to the building and made off with the store’s safe, leaving through the back door. An undisclosed amount was in the safe.
“No cash registers were bothered, they just stole a small safe and left out the back,” Fick said.
The sheriff’s office received a call from the employees who discovered the break-in and relayed it to town police. Fick said the break-in had to have taken place between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. No fingerprints were found at the scene.
KD’s Qwik Stop was also burglarized twice earlier this month, breaking in the store’s back door, Fick said. After the first burglary, no missing items were discovered and a small amount of cash was missing after the second.
